Program Description:
Current data advises that 75% of individuals with permanent dentition present with malocclusion issues, and 47% of adult patients present with some form of periodontitis. Nevertheless, malocclusion is often blamed for periodontal conditions, or conversely, patients with unresolved periodontal disease may require critical occlusal intervention. When a hard and soft tissue examination demonstrates trends of attachment loss, the proverbial question remains…which came first, periodontal disease or malocclusion? As new research continues to evaluate the associations between malocclusion and resulting attachment loss, it becomes critical for the dental professional to understand the etiological factors that can affect the periodontium. The delicate balance between treating hard tissue modalities of abfractions, wear facets, and attrition and addressing soft tissue challenges of inflammation, boney defects, and unresolved periodontal destruction requires a concurrent management system. Join periodontal hygienist Katrina Sanders as she discusses the bidirectional relationship between malocclusion and periodontal conditions, and learn how to create an individualized, patient-centric care plan that addresses the myriad of etiologies of disease. Learn how to take a BITE out of PERIODONTAL DISEASE!
.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:
Identify oral health implications associated with secondary occlusal trauma.
Discover communication strategies to clarify the role of optimal occlusion as a means of achieving oral health standards.
